The graphical abstract has quietly become one of the most-judged and least-explained parts of a manuscript. Most authors first encounter the requirement in the middle of submission, scroll through a few examples on the journal's website, and then assemble something in PowerPoint at midnight using clipart and three font colours.
That midnight version usually does two things wrong at once: it tries to summarise the whole paper, and it relies on text rather than image to do so. The result is a small, dense diagram that adds nothing to discoverability and signals that the author did not understand what a graphical abstract is for.

That last word matters: a graphical abstract that shows only the topic, without hinting at the finding, performs measurably worse than one that shows the contribution.

What lives between the panels matters as much as what lives inside them. The arrows are not decorative — they tell the reader the reading order and the causal direction. If the relationship between your panels is not a clean left-to-right flow, the composition is fighting the reader.
Graphical abstract requirements vary widely. Some publishers treat them as mandatory; others as optional; others as actively unhelpful. Knowing which category your target journal falls into saves the panic of trying to design one during portal upload.
Treated as a portal-blocking requirement. Specific dimensions and file types mandated.
Welcomed but not required. Including one signals editorial care and improves visual discoverability.
