Paper Mills & the Retraction Wave: Protecting Your Record

Why does the retraction wave keep touching Chinese authors? How do paper mills work? And how does an honest researcher keep their record clean?

Integrity is the fast routeProtecting your record matters more than any one paper

The retraction wave is real, and it keeps touching Chinese authors. But what an honest researcher needs is not panic — it is a clear picture of what's happening, and a way to protect their own record. This article explains how paper mills operate, why the retraction wave is closely tied to China, and how an honest researcher can stay safe in the current environment.

10k+Global retractions hit a record above 10,000 in 2023
17k+By a Nature analysis, retractions with Chinese co-authors since 2021 exceed 17,000
Over halfA 2026 analysis found over half of retracted papers carry a China affiliation

1. What's happening — seen clearly

Over the past few years, academic publishing has been through a wave of retractions on an unprecedented scale. Two intertwined causes sit behind it: paper mills — an underground trade that mass-produces or fabricates papers and sells authorship and citations — and the long-running publish-or-perish pressure, along with past reward and promotion structures tied to paper counts. It's worth being fair here: China's research output is vast and its scrutiny concentrated, so its share in retraction statistics is high largely as a product of systemic pressure and a large-scale clean-up — not a moral judgement on every Chinese researcher.

Governance has tightened in parallel: in 2024 China launched its first nationwide, simultaneous audit of research integrity across all institutions; and in 2025 the Supreme People's Court, in guidance on technological innovation, explicitly called for cracking down on "paper industry chains" and severely punishing research fraud — a shift in judicial attitude (previously some lower courts had treated author–paper-mill contracts as ordinary business agreements).

2. What a paper mill actually does

Understanding the methods is how you recognise and avoid them. Common features include:

Selling authorship and citations — a price list by "author position", placing your name on a paper you had no part in.
Fabricating or altering data and images — duplicated or spliced figures; results that can't be reproduced.
Manipulating peer review — fake reviewers, suspicious email addresses, "friendly" mutual reviews.
Compromised special issues / guest editors — mass publication through manipulated special issues (the source of several mass retractions).
Odd "paper texture" — "tortured phrases" left by machine translation or careless AI, and abnormal citation padding.

A retraction is permanent and public — one "shortcut" can follow you for your entire career.

3. What this means for your record

Why it deserves care A retraction is recorded long-term in public databases such as Retraction Watch and can affect grant review, promotion and PhD thesis spot-checks. Even if your own paper is sound, if it happens to sit in a journal undergoing mass retractions or a manipulated special issue, it can draw guilt-by-association scrutiny. In an era of nationwide audits, being able to clearly demonstrate the authenticity of your work matters more than ever.

4. How to protect your academic record

Never touch paper mills or buying/selling authorship. It leads to retraction and now carries legal risk too. (See publishing fast, legitimately.)
Vet the journal and the special issue before submitting.Confirm the journal isn't on a warning list, and be wary of unsolicited "guest-editor special issue" invitations. (See the Early Warning List guide.)
Guard your authorship.Refuse and report any "pay to be added as author" or "buy your slot" offer; make sure every co-author genuinely contributed, and refuse gift authorship.
Keep verifiable original records.Raw data, code, original images, submission and review correspondence — so you can defend your work if it's ever audited.
Self-check the integrity lines. No duplicated images, no citation padding; use AI only for language and disclose it, never to fabricate. (See editing ethics.)
Use only legitimate support.Editorial refinement, yes; ghost-writing, no — the author is always you.

If you're worried about something already published Don't panic. Keep your raw data and correspondence; watch whether the journal shows unusual retraction activity; and if it bears on an institutional assessment, learn your institution's integrity process and your right to respond. Having the facts and records ready is always the steadiest step.
In one line The retraction wave is driven by paper mills and publishing pressure. Protecting your record is simple in principle: avoid every shortcut, vet the journal and special issue, guard your authorship, keep original records, and use only legitimate support. Integrity is the route that actually lasts.

In a stricter environment, the most reliable strategy is still to do the research solidly and publish it cleanly.
