Methods and Results Reporting That SCI and SSCI Reviewers Expect

Research Ramp Editorial Team · September 2026 · 8 min read ·

Reviewers rarely reject a paper because the writing is dull. They reject it because they cannot verify what was done or cannot trust what was found. Both failures live in the methods and results sections, and both are fixable before submission, because what reviewers expect is written down in reporting guidelines and visible in every recent article of your target journal. This guide sets out the methods and results reporting SCI and SSCI reviewers expect, what each index weighs most, and the items whose absence triggers a major revision.

Methods

In many SCI journals the methods section is the section most often cited in major revision requests. In SSCI journals it is the measurement and validity reporting within it. Either way, incomplete reporting is the most fixable cause of delay.

The reproducibility standard

The methods section has one test: could a competent researcher in your field repeat the study from your description and expect a similar result? Everything that would be needed for that repetition belongs in the section or its supplement. Everything that would not is filler. Write it in the past tense, in the order the study was done, with subheadings that match the journal's convention.

ElementWhat reviewers needCommon omission
DesignType of study named explicitly; rationale in one sentenceDesign never stated; reader infers it
Participants or materialsSource, eligibility, recruitment, final numbers, and a flow of exclusionsFinal sample given but attrition not explained
Sample sizeHow it was determined: power analysis, saturation, precedent, or resource limit stated honestlyNo justification at all
Instruments or apparatusName, source, items or specifications, adaptation, reliability in this sampleReliability quoted from the original study, not yours
ProcedureWhat happened to each participant or specimen, in order, with timingProcedure compressed into one sentence
AnalysisEvery test used, assumptions checked, software and version, how missing data were handledMissing data never mentioned
EthicsApproval body and number, consent, registration where requiredApproval mentioned without a number

Our post on how to justify your sample size covers the item reviewers challenge most, and how to handle missing data covers the item authors forget most.

What SCI reviewers weigh most

Precision and controls. SCI reviewers check that variables were measured with stated accuracy, that controls or comparison conditions rule out the obvious alternatives, that replicates are reported, and that the statistics match the design. They expect a reporting guideline to have been followed where one exists: CONSORT for trials, STROBE for observational studies, PRISMA for reviews, ARRIVE for animal studies, and discipline-specific checklists elsewhere. Our post on CONSORT, STROBE and PRISMA explains which applies.

What SSCI reviewers weigh most

Validity of constructs and adequacy of design. SSCI reviewers ask whether the scales measure what they claim, whether the sample can support the generalisation, whether common method bias was addressed, and whether the analysis (regression, SEM, thematic analysis, case comparison) is justified and reported to the field's standard. For quantitative work this means reliability and validity statistics in your sample, model fit indices with thresholds, and effect sizes. For qualitative work it means a transparent account of sampling, coding and trustworthiness. See SEM and CFA reporting, reliability and validity and trustworthiness in qualitative research.

Results: report, do not interpret

The results section presents what was found, in the order of the research questions or hypotheses, without saying what it means. Every "this suggests" or "this confirms" belongs in the discussion. Reviewers in both indexes look for the same reporting elements.

  1. Descriptive statistics first.Sample characteristics and variable summaries in a table, so the reader can judge the data before the tests.
  2. Each hypothesis or question answered in sequence.Test statistic, degrees of freedom, p value, effect size and confidence interval, in the journal's format.
  3. Tables and figures that stand alone.Titles that state what is shown, full labels, units, notes with abbreviations and significance markers. A reviewer should understand each without the text.
  4. Negative and null findings reported.Omitting them is a red flag. State them plainly and move on.
  5. Text and tables consistent. The number in the sentence matches the number in the table. Reviewers check.

Our posts on how to write the results section and what goes in results versus discussion cover the boundary, and publication-quality figures and tables covers presentation.

The items whose absence triggers major revision

Reviewer trigger list

  • No sample size justification
  • Reliability or validity not reported for this sample
  • Assumptions of the statistical tests never checked
  • Missing data not mentioned
  • Effect sizes absent; only p values reported
  • Ethics approval number or consent statement missing
  • Figures without error bars or without stated n
  • Reporting guideline checklist completed and cited
  • Software and version named; analysis code or data availability stated
  • Every table readable without the text
Common mistake

Copying the reliability, validity or instrument description from the original scale development paper instead of reporting it for your own sample. Reviewers in SSCI journals notice immediately, and it reads as either carelessness or concealment.

Qualitative and mixed methods: the reporting reviewers expect

SSCI reviewers of qualitative work do not ask for reproducibility in the experimental sense. They ask for transparency: how participants were chosen and why that many, how data were generated (interview guide, duration, recording), how analysis proceeded (coding approach, software, who coded, how disagreements were resolved), and how trustworthiness was established (member checking, audit trail, reflexivity). Results are then presented as themes with representative quotations, not as counts. For mixed methods, reviewers additionally expect the integration point to be explicit: where and how the two strands were combined and what the combination added. See qualitative research for journal publication, mixed methods structure and how to present qualitative findings.

Supplementary material: what to move out of the main text

Most SCI and SSCI journals accept supplementary files, and reviewers appreciate a main text that stays within limits. Move to the supplement: full instruments or interview guides, extended descriptive tables, robustness checks that confirm the main analysis, code and data availability details, and reporting guideline checklists. Keep in the main text: everything a reader needs to understand and judge the primary result. Refer to each supplementary item at the point it is relevant, so reviewers know it exists.
