Author Order, Co-First & Corresponding: China vs International

Does your institution credit co-first authors? How is corresponding author counted? Can the order change later? Settle it before you submit.

Order isn't just a formalityIt decides "whose achievement this is"

Author order looks like a formality at the top of a manuscript, but at promotion, graduation and grant time it decides whose achievement a paper is. The trouble is that Chinese evaluation habits and international journal rules don't always line up — especially on co-first authors, corresponding authors, and whether the order can change. Understanding these, and settling them before you submit, is how you avoid losing out later.

1. Read a byline first

2. The international rule (ICMJE)

International journals generally follow ICMJE authorship principles: authorship rests on "contribution", not "position" (the four criteria are in our editing-ethics guide). From this follow a few key rules:

✓
Order is agreed by the authors. The journal respects the order you agree, but generally won't intervene in disputes — those are for the authors and their institutions to resolve.
✓
Corresponding author is a responsibility, not a title. They handle submission, communicate with editors, ensure all authors approve, and are accountable for the whole paper — it isn't a seniority prize.
✓
Every listed author must genuinely qualify. No gift or guest authorship; no buying or casually adding authors. (See paper mills & the retraction wave.)

3. The China reality: where the mismatch is

Authorship caseInternational journalsDomestic evaluation (common, but varies by institution)
First / corresponding authorBoth important, clearly definedUsually the two that "count", weighted highest
Co-first authors (†)Widely accepted as equal contributionWhether equal to first, and how scored, varies — some fully credit, some only the listed-first, some pro-rate
Co-corresponding authorsCommon and acceptedSome institutions don't recognise, or credit only one — confirm first
Middle authorsListed by contributionUsually weighted lightly

It's exactly these mismatches that catch people out: the paper publishes fine, but back at the institution the co-first credit isn't counted as equal.

Author order looks like a formality — but at promotion and graduation, it decides whose achievement it is.

4. The riskiest step: changing authorship later

Authorship changes: be careful, and keep a trail Adding, removing or reordering authors after submission — and especially after acceptance — requires all authors' consent and the journal's approval, and draws close scrutiny. "Unauthorised authorship changes" are a classic paper-mill red flag (see paper mills & the retraction wave). The safest move is to fix the order and roles before you submit.

5. Five things to do before submitting

✓
Agree order and roles in writing before submission.Who is first, whether there are co-first authors, who is corresponding — on paper, to avoid later disputes.
✓
Confirm every author meets the ICMJE criteria. No gift authorship, no adding people who didn't contribute.
✓
Mark it correctly for the target journal.Use † for co-first and * for corresponding, with an "equal contribution" note and a contribution statement.
✓
Check how your institution counts co-first / co-corresponding first.Don't stake graduation or promotion on it while unsure whether it counts. (See PhD graduation requirements.)
✓
Keep contribution records.Use something like CRediT to record who did what, so you can explain it clearly if asked.
In one line International journals credit contribution; order is agreed by the authors and the journal doesn't arbitrate. Whether co-first / co-corresponding counts equally at home varies by institution. Before submitting, fix order and roles in writing, confirm everyone qualifies, mark it correctly — and check your institution's stance.
