How Many SCI Papers for a PhD in China?

There is no national "how many". After 破四唯, do you still need papers? For science, humanities, and every advisor — how is the requirement set?

No national standardThe rule is in your degree regulations, not online

3
学科差异理工科多以SCI/EI计;人文社科多要求CSSCI(通常1–3篇,且更难)。
4

"How many SCI papers do I actually need to graduate with a PhD?" is one of the most-searched — and most-anxious — questions Chinese doctoral students ask. The honest answer surprises many: there is no single national number. And since the 2020 破四唯 reform and the 2025 Degree Law took effect, this has become more decentralised, not more uniform. This article explains what actually sets your requirement, what 破四唯 really changed, and how to find the one rule that applies to you.

0There is no national number mandating "a PhD must publish X SCI papers"
59+In 2026 at least 59 leading universities revised their degree rules, several graduating their first cohorts via practice achievements

1. The bottom line: there is no "national standard"

The figures you see online — "a PhD needs 2 SCI papers", "3 core-journal papers" — are almost always the rule of one university, one school, one year, passed around as if universal. The state has never mandated a uniform number. In 2020 the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science and Technology explicitly moved to break "SCI supremacy", stating that the number of SCI papers should not be a limiting condition for degree conferral — which effectively handed the decision back to each university. Variation across universities, disciplines and schools widened as a result.

2. What actually sets your requirement

Rather than asking around about "how many others published", pin down the five variables that set yours:

1
Your university's degree-conferral regulationsThe base layer. Some universities have removed hard paper requirements; some keep them.
2
Your school/discipline's added rulesOften stricter than the university's. Schools frequently set "must publish X" or "must reach tier Y".
3
DisciplineScience and engineering usually count SCI/EI; humanities and social sciences usually require CSSCI (often 1–3, and harder to place).
4
Your advisor's expectationsEven where the university relaxes, an advisor may still require publication — often the real, unwritten threshold.
5
Your enrolment yearRules usually apply by the year you enrolled. Read the programme plan for your intake, not the newest version.

As a rough orientation (always defer to your own university's document): science and engineering PhDs commonly face around 1–3 SCI papers, usually requiring first authorship, your university as the first affiliation, and a topic tied to your dissertation; humanities and social sciences usually centre on CSSCI. But that is only "typical" — it is not your rule.

破四唯 didn't remove the paper — it removed the habit of measuring a scholar by a single number.

3. What 破四唯 actually changed

2020MOE and MOST moved to break "SCI supremacy", stating SCI paper counts should not be a limiting condition for degree conferral.
1 January 2025The Academic Degrees Law took effect, confirming students may apply for a degree via a thesis defence or a defined practice-achievement defence.
2026By incomplete count, at least 59 leading universities updated their degree rules, and around 25 graduated their first cohorts via practice achievements (mostly engineering fields such as electronic information, mechanical, materials and chemical engineering).
Key point: "no longer paper-only" ≠ "no papers needed" The reform means papers are no longer the sole criterion — not that publication is abolished. The vast majority of PhD students still need to publish; the practice-achievement route currently applies mainly to specific engineering professional degrees, is just as demanding, and is not a shortcut. And even where a university drops the hard rule, many still publish for the job market, postdocs and awards.

4. A 2026 "tier" trap

If your requirement reads "must publish CAS Tier 2 or above" or "Tier 1", note that CAS stopped publishing its ranking in 2026; the 新锐 ranking took over but is not CAS-endorsed, and universities apply different standards. Confirm which edition your institution now uses (2025 CAS / 新锐 / JCR). See our CAS vs JCR vs 新锐 explainer.

5. Five things to do now

1
Find the programme plan and degree regulations for your enrolment year (the written version), and read the publication clause line by line.
2
Confirm with your graduate secretary or school whether there are added requirements — a university-level relaxation does not mean the school relaxed.
3
Get your advisor's expectations in writing where possible — the unwritten threshold is often the decisive one.
4
Confirm which ranking/indexing edition counts — especially after the 2026 change to the tier system.
5
Work the timeline backward from your defence date — leave room for submission, review, revision and publication; don't cut it fine.
In one line Don't hunt for a "standard answer" online. Your requirement lives in the degree regulations for your enrolment year and your school, plus your advisor's expectations. Confirm it, then plan backward from your defence date with a realistic publication timeline.

What actually causes the anxiety is rarely "how many" — it is "not enough time, and no clear plan".
