MDPI(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute)是一家总部在瑞士的大型开放获取(OA)出版社,旗下有大量期刊,其中很大一部分被 SCIE/SSCI 正常收录。
1
它当前是否被 SCIE/SSCI 收录?

"Is MDPI a water journal? Will my university count it?" — this is probably the most-argued question Chinese researchers face when choosing a journal. The honest answer is that no single line settles it. It depends on two things: which specific journal you mean, and your own institution's rules. This article lays out both sides of the debate and gives you the three checks that actually decide it before you submit.
1. First, one fact
MDPI (the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute) is a large Swiss-based open-access (OA) publisher with a great many journals, a large share of which are properly indexed in SCIE/SSCI. So blanket claims like "OA equals water journal" or "MDPI is never recognised" are simply inaccurate. What actually needs judging is the quality of a specific journal and how your institution treats it.
2. Both sides of the debate
✓ The case that they're fine
- Many MDPI journals are properly indexed in SCIE/SSCI, with independent DOIs and peer review.
- In the 2026 新锐 ranking, several MDPI titles once labelled "water journals" rose to Tier 2, and a few earned TOP marks.
- Fast review, friendly to Chinese authors, and genuinely useful for graduation and project deadlines.
- OA does not mean low quality — Nature Communications and Science Advances are also high-fee OA.
⚠ The concerns raised
- Some titles have very high yearly output and heavy reliance on special issues, straining editorial control.
- APCs run high — some flagship titles now charge well over ¥20,000.
- Historically some MDPI titles have been flagged; a few have been delisted from SCIE.
- Many universities issue their own risk lists that sweep in MDPI, Frontiers and Hindawi wholesale.
Both sides are essentially right — which is exactly why "can I submit to MDPI" has no single answer. The key is to narrow the question: does this one title, at your institution, count?
MDPI contains both solid journals and high-output ones to be wary of. The question was never "is MDPI good" — it is "does your institution count this one".
3. The three checks that actually decide it
Rather than argue over reputation, take one specific journal and work through these in order:
1
Is it currently indexed in SCIE/SSCI?Verify the current status on the Web of Science Master Journal List — OA titles have been re-assessed and delisted before, so don't rely on an old screenshot.
2
What tier is it, and is it flagged?Check its 新锐/JCR tier and confirm it is
not on a warning or "Under Review" list. (See our
Early Warning List guide.)
3
What is its status on your institution's own list? (decisive)Many universities publish their own risk lists that give no reward, funding or points to listed journals and ask staff to avoid them for promotion and graduation. This overrides everything — a high tier won't help if the title is on your university's avoid-list.
There is more than one warning list
Beyond the former CAS / 新锐 system, the Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China (ISTIC, 中信所) maintains a separate warning list, usually sent only to research-management offices, which can affect NSFC review, PhD thesis spot-checks and senior-title evaluation. The same journal may be treated differently across systems — go by the one your institution actually enforces.
4. Practical advice
If you're short on time and racing a graduation deadline
MDPI's speed is genuinely appealing, but "fast" cannot override "recognised". Clear check 3 first — confirm the target title is not on your university's avoid-list — then talk timeline. Otherwise you may publish quickly and still have it not count.
If you're up for promotion or applying for funding
The bar is usually stricter. Prioritise journals your institution explicitly recognises and that sit outside every warning system; be especially cautious with titles that are special-issue-heavy or extremely high-output.
Either way
Let research fit and publishing ethics lead the choice, not "which title is fastest and easiest". Choose the right specific journal and MDPI can be a legitimate part of your strategy — this researcher published in a well-matched MDPI SSCI Q2 journal →.
In one line
Don't ask "is MDPI recognised" — ask "does this one title, at my institution, count?". Before submitting, check three things: current indexing, current tier and warning status, and your institution's own list — the last one matters most.
