“Should my literature review be thematic or chronological?” It is one of the most common questions early-career researchers ask, and the answer matters more than most realise. The structure you pick decides how your gap is positioned, how reviewers read your synthesis, and whether your research framework looks defensible or improvised.
This guide walks through the three main types of literature review structure used in journal papers — thematic, chronological, and methodological — and explains when each one is the right choice.
Each type organises prior research around a different logic. The right choice depends on what you want your reader to conclude by the time they reach your gap statement.
Organised by concept
Groups studies by theme, construct or argument. Most flexible. Default choice for empirical papers in SSCI management, education and psychology.
Organised by time
Traces how the field has evolved across eras. Suits papers where intellectual history matters — but easy to slip into pure summary.
Organised by approach
Compares how prior studies measured, designed or analysed the construct. Strongest fit when your contribution is methodological.
A thematic review groups studies by argument or construct. If your paper investigates the antecedents and consequences of organisational trust, you might have themes like “defining trust”, “antecedents of trust”, “mediators”, “outcomes”, and “contextual moderators”.
The strength of a thematic review is flexibility — you can showcase synthesis, contradictions, and emerging consensus all within one section. The weakness is that ill-defined themes turn into topic labels rather than arguments, which signals a shallow reading of the field. Three to five sharply defined themes is the sweet spot.
A chronological review tells a story across time. Studies are grouped by era — perhaps “early conceptual work (1990–2005)”, “empirical expansion (2006–2015)”, and “post-pandemic re-examination (2020–present)”. It can be powerful when your field has clearly distinct phases of inquiry.
The risk is that chronological reviews drift toward pure summary: “In 2008, X published… Then in 2012, Y published… Then in 2018, Z published…” If the eras you identify do not reflect substantive shifts in the field, this structure will read as descriptive rather than analytical.
Use chronological reviews when policy or paradigm changes matter, when you are writing a historical or longitudinal piece, or when one of your contributions is to show how a debate has evolved.
The strongest reviews often use a high-level chronological frame to organise the discussion but apply thematic synthesis within each era. This avoids the descriptive trap while preserving the narrative arc.
A methodological review organises prior studies by how they were conducted: “cross-sectional survey studies”, “longitudinal panel studies”, “qualitative case studies”, “experimental designs”. The point is not to summarise findings but to interrogate methods — what each design can and cannot tell us, and where the shared limitations lie.
This structure is most appropriate when your paper makes a methodological contribution, or when the gap you are positioning is methodological in nature (e.g. “prior studies relied on cross-sectional data, so causal direction remains unresolved”). It is common in quantitative SSCI papers, SCI engineering reviews, and any paper introducing a stronger design than what came before.
If you are still unsure which type of literature review structure to pick, work through these questions in order. Whichever path returns an answer first is your structure.
This is a rule of thumb, not a hard mandate. Strong reviews often blend two structures — for instance, a thematic review with a brief chronological framing in the opening section. The point is that one structure should dominate; mixing in equal proportions usually confuses the reader.

Across all three types, the most common mistake is the same: organising the review by author rather than by argument. A paragraph that opens with “Smith (2018) found that…” and devotes the rest of itself to one author's work has slipped out of synthesis mode, regardless of which structure you intended.

For most journal papers being submitted to Scopus or Web of Science journals, thematic is the safe choice and the reviewer-friendly choice. Reach for chronological only when intellectual history matters to your argument, and methodological only when your critique of prior methods is itself part of your contribution. Whichever you pick, the review still has to end the same way — with a clearly positioned gap that earns the next section.
