The literature review is where most rejected papers reveal themselves. Reviewers read the introduction quickly, but they read the literature review carefully — because it is where they decide whether the author has actually understood the field or has merely collected references.

A literature review in a journal paper is not a summary of everything that has been written on a topic. That is a thesis chapter. A journal-paper literature review has one job: to make it inevitable that your specific contribution matters. Everything in it should serve that purpose.
Three functions matter most:
Papers that fail typically over-deliver on mapping, under-deliver on synthesis, and forget to position altogether. Reviewers notice immediately.
There is no single template. The right structure depends on the kind of question you are asking. Three types dominate journal papers, and each suits a different goal.

This is the sequence we use when guiding researchers through their first major literature review. Skip a step and the gap-positioning at the end will not land.
Define the construct, population, context and outcome. A literature review on “digital transformation” is unwritable; one on “digital transformation in Indian SMEs and its effect on export performance” is tractable.
Search Scopus, Web of Science and one discipline-specific database. Document your keywords, filters and date range. Even a non-systematic review benefits from a transparent search log.
For each paper, capture three things: the claim, the evidence, and the limitation the author acknowledges. The limitations are often where your gap lives.
Group papers into three to five themes. Each theme should be a substantive argument the field has been making, not a topic label. Themes become the sub-headings of your review.
Open the paragraph with a claim about what the field has established. Support it with multiple citations grouped by argument. Close with what is unresolved.
The final paragraph should name the specific gap, justify it from the prior synthesis, and lead naturally into your research objectives or questions.
The single most common rejection-trigger in literature reviews is the dreaded list of summaries: “Smith (2018) found X. Jones (2019) found Y. Lee (2020) found Z.” This reads like notes, not analysis. Reviewers will say the review is descriptive rather than analytical.
Synthesis means grouping by argument and showing where the literature lines up — or fractures. Compare the two paragraphs below on the same topic.

Naming the gap is not the same as positioning it. Naming says “no one has studied X”. Positioning says “given that the field has established A and B, and given that prior studies cannot answer C because of methodological limitation D, this paper addresses C using approach E.”
A well-positioned gap usually falls into one of four categories. Pick the one that genuinely fits your paper — claiming the wrong type weakens your contribution.
The construct has been studied, but not in your context, population or time period. Common for early-career researchers and country-specific studies.
Existing theories cannot fully explain the phenomenon. You propose extending, integrating or challenging a theoretical lens.
Prior studies share a measurement, design or analytical weakness. You address it with a stronger approach.
The literature shows inconsistent findings. You explain why — and your paper resolves the contradiction.

A literature review that does not end with a gap statement has not finished its job. A gap statement that does not flow from the review has not earned its place.
Most empirical papers in SSCI journals expect a clearly identified theoretical framework, drawn from the literature review itself. The framework should not appear out of nowhere — the literature review must justify why it is the right lens.
Two placements are common. In thematic reviews, the framework is introduced as the final synthesis section, immediately before the gap. In methodological reviews, the framework appears earlier as the lens through which prior studies are critiqued. Papers that stitch together three or four theoretical frames tend to lose focus. Reviewers prefer a single, well-justified framework with one supporting theory if needed. Save the rest for a future paper.
There is no fixed answer, but journal-tier expectations are real. Q1 SSCI and SCI journals expect 45–80 references, with at least 60% from the last five years and a meaningful share from the last two years. Q3 and Q4 journals are more flexible but still expect recency.
Foundational sources matter — citing the seminal paper that introduced your construct (even if it is from 1995) signals scholarly literacy. But if your most recent reference is from 2020, reviewers will assume the literature review was written years ago and never updated. Author-by-author walkthrough. Organising the review as one paragraph per author signals you have read but not synthesised. Group by argument instead.
No critique. A review that praises every prior study uniformly is uncritical. Show where studies disagree or fall short.
Outdated sources. Citing mainly 2010–2018 work in a 2026 paper signals the literature review has not been refreshed.
Disconnected from the gap. If the gap statement at the end could be deleted without the review losing coherence, the gap was never positioned — it was tacked on.
Missing seminal references. If reviewers know your field, they will notice when you skip the foundational paper. Read the most-cited paper in each theme before writing.

For quantitative papers, the literature review naturally feeds into a conceptual framework — usually a model showing the constructs and their hypothesised relationships. For qualitative papers, the review feeds into a sensitising framework or set of guiding concepts rather than a model. The principle is the same: the literature review must produce the lens through which the methodology is justified.
Before submitting, run your literature review through these questions. If you cannot answer yes to all of them, the review needs another pass.
