Few moments in writing a journal paper feel as paralysing as the question: what is my theoretical framework? Supervisors expect one. Reviewers demand one. SSCI journals will reject papers that lack one. Yet the choice rarely feels obvious — especially for early-career researchers who have read widely but committed to nothing.
This guide walks through how to choose a theoretical framework from the literature you have already read, why the framework should not be invented from scratch, and how to align it with your research question and methodology.
A theoretical framework is the lens through which you make sense of your phenomenon. It is a set of related concepts — usually drawn from one or two established theories — that explain why the relationships in your study should exist or matter.
It is not the same as a conceptual framework. A conceptual framework is the visual model showing your specific constructs and hypothesised paths. Reviewers want to see three things in your theoretical framing:
The single biggest mistake junior researchers make is trying to construct an original theoretical framework from scratch. Reviewers see this immediately. A made-up framework with no citation history reads as an undergraduate exercise, not a publishable contribution.
Established theories already exist for almost every phenomenon you might study. Your job is to pick the one that fits, justify the pick, and apply it cleanly. Below are four frameworks frequently used in SCI, SSCI and Scopus papers across disciplines — recognise them, and you will start spotting them in everything you read.
Predicts behaviour from attitudes, subjective norms and perceived control. Widely used in consumer, health and education studies.
Explains firm performance through valuable, rare, inimitable and non-substitutable resources. Default for competitive-advantage papers.
Explain why people adopt or resist new technologies. Ubiquitous in IT, e-learning, AI-in-education and digital transformation studies.
Frames stress, burnout and engagement around resource gain and loss. Common across HR, OB and occupational health research.
These are illustrative, not exhaustive. Your sub-field has its own dominant frameworks — and the fastest way to identify them is to look at what recent Q1–Q2 papers in your area are citing.
If you do not yet have a framework in mind, this process moves you from blank page to defensible choice in a few focused reading sessions.
Use Scopus or Web of Science. Sort by citations within the last five years. These papers represent the active conversation in your field.
Most empirical papers state their framework in the introduction or early literature review. Tally them. Two or three theories will dominate.
Ask: does this theory explain the relationship I am investigating? Does it generate testable predictions? Does it offer constructs I can operationalise?
Whichever theory fits best, read the original seminal paper (often from 30+ years ago). You must cite it. Reviewers expect to see it.
Knowing how to choose a theoretical framework is a craft you develop across multiple papers. The first time is the hardest. Your second paper will reuse 70% of the same scaffolding.
Most reviewers prefer one well-justified primary theory, optionally extended by a second secondary theory. Three or more frameworks usually weakens the paper rather than strengthening it — the lenses start contradicting each other, and your discussion section will struggle to reconcile them.

You are testing a clear set of relationships within one well-defined construct space. One theory will hold the paper together.
Q1 SCI/SSCI journals prefer one strong theoretical anchor for cleanly testable hypotheses.
Your topic genuinely sits between two fields. Combining two theories is a contribution in itself — if justified.
Different stages of your model are explained by different mechanisms. A primary + secondary theory works.
Reviewers respect papers that engage rigorously with one framework — citing its assumptions, its boundary conditions and its critics — far more than papers that namedrop three theories without integrating any.
A framework that is named but not integrated is worse than no framework at all. If you cite the Theory of Planned Behaviour in your literature review but never reference attitudes, norms or perceived control in your methods or discussion, the reviewer will notice — and they will flag it.
The test of integration is whether the constructs and language of your theory appear in every major section: literature review, hypotheses, measures, results interpretation, and discussion. If your framework only appears in one place, it is decoration, not scaffolding.
A theoretical framework that you can delete from the paper without losing coherence was never really part of the paper.
This integration is closely tied to how to identify and state your research gap: the gap you identify must be answerable using the lens of the theory you choose. A theory-gap mismatch is one of the most common rejection reasons in SSCI submissions.
Theory namedrop. Citing a theory once in the introduction and never returning to it. Better to omit the theory than to fake-cite it.
Wrong theory for the level of analysis. Using an individual-level theory to explain firm-level outcomes (or vice versa). Levels must match.
Outdated framework. Citing a theory that has been substantially revised or superseded. Always check what has happened to your theory in the last decade.
Missing the founder. Skipping the original seminal paper that introduced the theory. Reviewers in your field will notice.
Framework-discussion disconnect. The discussion section interprets findings through general intuition rather than the theory you committed to.
If you have received reviewer feedback that your framework is weak, the fix is usually structural — not cosmetic. If you are stuck, return to the literature you have already collected. The framework you need is almost certainly already there, named by the authors of three or four papers you have read.
