A conceptual framework is the visual model that holds your empirical paper together. Reviewers look for it explicitly. Many SCI, SSCI and Scopus journals will not move past the introduction without seeing one. And yet most early-career researchers either skip it or paste in a generic boxes-and-arrows diagram that has no obvious connection to the literature they just reviewed.
This guide walks through how to build a conceptual framework that actually emerges from your literature review — turning the constructs, mechanisms and gaps you have identified into a defensible model that the rest of the paper can be built around.
Before building one, settle a confusion. A theoretical framework is the lens — usually a named theory — that explains why relationships in your study should exist. A conceptual framework is the specific model you build using that lens, populated with your variables and your hypothesised relationships.
One is general; the other is specific. One is borrowed; the other is yours.

The most common form is a path diagram: boxes representing constructs, arrows representing hypothesised relationships, sometimes with moderators or controls. Below is a simple example for an SSCI management study on remote work.
A reviewer can read this diagram in five seconds and know exactly what the paper is testing. That is the standard you are aiming for. Vague or decorative diagrams — boxes with arrows pointing nowhere meaningful — get flagged as cosmetic.
The framework is not invented; it is extracted. Three movements take you from a finished literature review to a defensible model.
List every construct that appears in your literature review more than twice. Drop the ones that are not central to your gap.
For each pair of remaining constructs, note what the literature says about their relationship — direct, mediated, moderated, or unestablished.
Draw the model. Each arrow becomes a hypothesis. Each unestablished relationship becomes a contribution.
The clean test of whether your framework actually came from your literature review is simple: every construct in the diagram should be defined in the review, and every arrow should be supported by at least two cited papers. If a construct appears only in the diagram, it is decoration. If an arrow has no literature behind it, the hypothesis is unsupported.
Not every paper needs the same diagram shape. The structure follows the question you are asking.
Pick the simplest shape that genuinely answers your research question. A moderated-mediation diagram with eight constructs looks ambitious but rarely survives reviewer scrutiny in a single paper — and may even raise salami slicing concerns.
A good conceptual framework is not a standalone visual. It is the hinge between the literature review and the methodology. Every section of the paper should align with it.

A conceptual framework that does not appear visually in your paper is a framework you have not committed to. Reviewers read diagrams first, words second.
Put H1, H2, H3 directly on the arrows. This single move makes your diagram navigable and shows reviewers that you have not just drawn boxes — you have committed to testable claims.
In most empirical papers the framework appears at the end of the literature review or at the start of the methodology section, immediately after the final hypothesis is stated. It is referenced as Figure 1 or Figure 2, with a clean caption explaining what the diagram represents.
The diagram itself should be production-ready: simple shapes, readable labels, clear arrows, and a consistent visual language. A hand-drawn or PowerPoint-style figure is fine for early drafts but should be redrawn cleanly before submission. Reviewers do judge.
The decorative diagram. Boxes and arrows with no connection to the literature review. Reviewers will ask which paragraphs justify which arrows — and not finding answers will trigger revision.
Too many constructs. Eight or more constructs in a single paper is usually a signal that two papers have been squeezed into one. Three to five core constructs is typical.
Unmeasurable constructs. Including a construct in the diagram that you cannot operationalise in the methods. If you cannot measure it, you cannot test it.
Inconsistent labelling. The variable is called “engagement” in the diagram, “work engagement” in the methods, and “employee engagement” in the results. Pick one term and stick with it across the whole paper.
Missing the hypotheses. A diagram with no H1/H2/H3 labels is incomplete. Each arrow must be tied to a numbered hypothesis the rest of the paper tests.
Start by listing the three to five constructs that appear most often in your literature review. Sketch them on paper and try drawing arrows based only on what the literature has actually established. The empty arrows — the relationships your literature could not confirm — are usually where your contribution lives.
