“How many references should my paper have?” is a question every researcher asks at least once. The honest answer is: it depends on your target journal — but “it depends” is not useful guidance. This post gives concrete benchmarks by quartile so you can stop guessing.

Knowing how many sources for a literature review you actually need helps in two ways. It prevents under-referencing (which signals shallow engagement with the field) and over-referencing (which signals you have included anything you could find). Both get flagged in peer review.

These are guidelines, not rules. The deeper principle is that your reference count should match the depth of engagement reviewers expect at that tier. Q1 reviewers expect to see every major argument in the field acknowledged. Q4 reviewers care more about competent engagement with the core sources.

Why Reference Count Matters to Reviewers

Reviewers do not literally count references, but they form quick impressions. A paper submitted to a Q1 SSCI journal with 22 references will look thin before the reviewer has read a single paragraph. A paper submitted to a Q4 journal with 130 references will look unfocused.

Three things are being judged through the reference count:

  • Coverage. Have you read enough of the field to know the conversation?
  • Recency. Are you reading current debates, or only the literature you discovered in your PhD years ago?
  • Selectivity. Have you cited the right sources — or just whatever turned up in the first search?

Recency — The Hidden Standard

Reviewers almost always check the reference list quickly: the publication dates of the first ten and the last ten. If most of your sources are from 2014–2019 and you are submitting in 2026, the literature review will look stale regardless of how many references you have included.

The 60% rule is a reasonable benchmark for Q1 and Q2 journals: at least 60% of your citations should be from the past five years. Foundational sources from earlier eras still count — citing the seminal paper that introduced your construct is a strength, not a weakness. But the bulk of your engagement should be current.

Reviewers do not count references — they sample them. A reference list scanned in ten seconds either signals current engagement, or signals a literature review written years ago and never updated.

Before submission, sort your references by year. You should see clear weight in the last three years, sustained presence in the last five, and a handful of foundational older sources. If the distribution looks flat or back-loaded toward old work, refresh before you submit.

Discipline Matters Too

The ranges above are averages. Some disciplines naturally have more or fewer references per paper.

  • Engineering and computer science: often lower counts (30–60 in Q1) because dense numerical results substitute for extended discussion.
  • Management, education, psychology: usually higher counts (60–100 in Q1) because theoretical positioning and construct definition require more sources.
  • Medical and clinical: structured by reporting guidelines (CONSORT, STROBE, PRISMA) — the count is often shaped by those checklists rather than open choice.
  • Reviews and meta-analyses: reference counts of 150–300 are common and expected.

Always check three or four recent papers from your target journal. Look at their reference counts and the distribution of dates. That gives you a tighter benchmark than any general rule.

Common Mistakes Around Reference Count

Patterns reviewers flag

Padding. Adding marginally relevant sources to hit a perceived count. Reviewers can tell — and unrelated citations weaken the paper.

Citation clumps. Listing six citations after a single claim suggests you have not read them individually. Two well-chosen citations beat six unread ones.

Old-only references. A literature review where the newest source is three years old will trigger reviewer comments even if the count is technically adequate.

Self-citation imbalance. Citing yourself 8 times in a 40-reference paper looks promotional. Aim for under 15%.

Missing seminal works. Skipping the foundational paper for your construct is the single fastest way to lose credibility with a knowledgeable reviewer.
