Journals for Construction Project Management and BIM Research: Diamond OA, Gold OA and Subscription Routes Compared

Journal and conference list verified as on October 2026.

Start with the calendar, because in construction research it is the calendar that usually breaks a plan. A first submission to a strong SCIE title in this field typically takes three to six months to a first decision. A major revision adds two to four months. A second review round adds another one to three. Production and online publication add a further one to three months after acceptance.

Add those up honestly and a single paper runs somewhere between eight months and eighteen from submission to a citable, indexed record. If your viva is in nine months, one submission to one Q1 journal is not a plan, it is a bet. The engineering route that works is a sequence: aim high with the paper that can wait, and put the paper you need on record into a faster venue.

Deadline planner

Move the slider to the number of months you have before your deadline. The lanes show which route still fits.

This post groups every venue by what you pay, because in this subject the money and the wait move in opposite directions. The journals that charge no APC are often the ones that take longest, and the ones that publish quickly usually charge.

How to read a quartile before you read the list

Two quartiles exist and they are not the same measure. The Scopus quartile comes from Scimago, inside a Scopus subject category. The JCR quartile comes from Clarivate, inside a Web of Science category, using the impact factor. Construction titles frequently sit a band apart on the two systems.

The index tier matters more than either. An ESCI journal shows an impact factor and a quartile that look exactly like an SCIE one on screen, so an ESCI Q1 will not satisfy a rule asking for SCIE. Where the tier is not recorded, the tables say so rather than guess, and those titles need an ISSN check on the Master Journal List. Getting that right first is the opening step of Journal Submission Preparation.

This is where the senior journals of the discipline sit. You pay nothing unless you choose the optional open access licence at the end, which is exactly where an unexpected invoice appears. Rows run from SCIE down through AHCI and ESCI to Scopus-only titles.

Indexed conference routes in construction research

Construction has a genuinely useful conference circuit, which is unusual. A conference suits a first result on a live project where the finding will date. Indexing is decided one volume at a time, so check the coming edition rather than the reputation of the series.

Co-authorship and supervisor credit in construction research

This discipline has a particular problem: a paper often depends on a contractor, a client organisation or an industry partner who supplied the data and expects to be named. Four rules keep that clean.

  1. Authorship follows contribution, not seniority or access. A person who designed the study, gathered or analysed the data, or revised the manuscript substantively is an author. A person who only granted site access or signed a data agreement is acknowledged, not listed.
  2. Your supervisor is not automatic. No journal requires a supervisor as co-author, and authorship standards do not grant it by position. If they shaped the work they qualify. Many universities have an internal rule for thesis-derived papers, so check yours rather than assume either way.
  3. Industry partners need a written agreement before submission. Agree authorship, who approves the manuscript, and what can be published about the project, in writing, at the start. Construction data is commercially sensitive, and an objection at proof stage can stop a paper outright.
  4. Anonymise the project, not the method. Where a partner will not be named, describe the project by type, size, procurement route and region, and keep the method fully transparent. Reviewers accept an anonymous case study, not an unexplained one.

Write the contributor statement while you write the methods. Where a study needs a partner institution or a second country to become publishable, that is Collaboration Matching, and getting the draft itself submission-ready is Manuscript Preparation Support.

What gets accepted in this field, and what gets rejected

Construction management reviewers are pragmatic. They forgive a modest sample and they do not forgive a vague method.

Likely accepted

  • A real project, described precisely. Type, value band, procurement route, duration, region, and what stage the data cover.
  • A measured outcome. Cost variance, schedule performance, rework, clash counts, productivity. Something that moved.
  • A baseline to compare against. The same contractor before BIM, a matched project, or a documented industry benchmark.
  • Transparent model settings. Software, version, level of detail, how the model was built and by whom.
  • Practitioner relevance stated plainly. What a project manager should do differently on Monday.
  • Limits owned. One firm, one country, one contract type, said in the paper rather than found by a reviewer.

Likely rejected

  • Another BIM barriers questionnaire. Ranking the same fifteen barriers on a new sample of eighty professionals.
  • A maturity framework with no test. A five-level model proposed, illustrated with a diagram, never validated.
  • A case study with no case detail. "A large project in a developing country" with nothing further.
  • Software described as a finding. A walkthrough of what a tool does, with no research question attached.
  • Benefits claimed without measurement. Time savings asserted from interviews and reported as results.
  • A sample of convenience presented as national evidence. Forty responses from one city, generalised to a country.

What is the CAS partition, and how is it different from the JCR quartile?

The CAS partition, run by the National Science Library of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, sorts journals into Zones 1 to 4 within a subject, and Zone 1 covers only the top five percent of titles in that subject. The JCR quartile splits the same kind of list into four equal quarters, so Q1 is the top twenty five percent.

That difference is why a JCR Q1 journal can sit in CAS Zone 2 or 3. CAS is the stricter cut, it is updated annually, and Chinese institutions that use it usually mean the basic edition or the upgraded edition specifically, so ask which one your rule names.

Which construction management journals are CAS Zone 1?

The CAS partition is published separately each year by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and is not part of the Scopus or Web of Science data behind this page, so no zone assignments are listed here rather than guessed. Check the current year's table through your university library, which is where almost every Chinese institution hosts it.

As a working expectation in this field, the very top SCIE titles such as Automation in Construction sit high, and most of the rest of this page does not reach Zone 1. Confirm before you rely on it, because zones move year to year.

Do Chinese universities accept Scopus Q1, or only CAS Zone 1 and 2?

It varies by institution and often by department, and many Chinese universities assess on the CAS partition rather than on Scopus at all. Where CAS is the standard, a Scopus Q1 with a weak CAS zone can count for much less than its quartile suggests.

Get the written rule before choosing a venue. If it names CAS zones, plan around the zone table; if it names SCIE or JCR quartiles, plan around those; and if it names Scopus, the tables on this page apply directly.

How do Chinese institutions rank construction management journals?

Most Chinese universities use the CAS partition first, often alongside an internal list naming specific journals for promotion, and some engineering schools also recognise EI Compendex coverage. Scopus quartiles usually count for less than CAS zones, so a Scopus Q1 title with no Web of Science listing may carry little weight in China.

Get your institution's written rule before choosing a venue, because the same paper can count fully at a Malaysian university and very little at a Chinese one.

Which construction management journals accept secondary data or publicly available datasets?

Nearly all of them, provided the data genuinely answer a research question rather than being analysed because they were available. Tender records, building permits, national productivity statistics, BIM object libraries and published cost indices all appear regularly in the journals on this page.

Two conditions apply. State the licence and the access date for every dataset, and show why the secondary source can answer your question, since a reviewer's first instinct is to ask what primary data would have shown instead.

Do I need ethics approval for a construction paper using open data?

Usually not for genuinely public, non-personal data such as project cost indices or permit records, but the decision belongs to your institution rather than to you or the journal. The line is personal data: if records identify individual workers, accident victims or named respondents, approval is normally required even where the file is downloadable.

Interviews and site surveys always need approval. Get the reference number before you collect anything, because no journal on this page will accept retrospective consent for human participants.

Which construction management journals require a data availability statement?

Most of the major publishers now require one on every research article, including Elsevier, Springer Nature, Taylor and Francis, Wiley and MDPI, which between them publish most of this page. The statement is required even when the answer is that the data cannot be shared.

Where a contractor will not release project data, say so explicitly and name the restriction: commercially confidential, available from the project owner on reasonable request, with the contact route. A restriction with a stated reason is accepted, an empty statement is not.

Can I publish a construction management paper without collecting primary data?

Yes, and several of the strongest routes in this field need no fieldwork at all: a systematic review with a stated protocol, a bibliometric analysis, a simulation or optimisation study, a legal and contractual analysis of published case law, or a secondary analysis of public project records.

What none of those can skip is a research question and a method. A literature summary with no protocol, or a model with no validation, is rejected as quickly as a thin survey would be.

What editors screen before a reviewer sees your paper

The editorial office checks whether the English is clear enough to review, whether the structure and reference style match the journal, and what the similarity report says. Construction papers often carry a high overlap score innocently, because standard clauses, contract definitions and method text repeat across a thesis and its articles. Run your own check first with the Plagiarism & AI Similarity Checker, and settle the language and formatting through Manuscript Editing rather than after a rejection.

Before you shortlist, the AI Journal Finder matches your abstract against indexed journals in seconds.

Where Research Ramp comes in

We match a finished abstract against live indexing, tell you plainly when a design will not survive the first screen, and prepare the submission so the editorial office has no reason to bounce it on formatting. Subject-matched PhD editors, milestone payments, and the author stays the author throughout. When the reviews come back long, that round is Review & Response Support, and past work is on our Case Studies page.

Questions we are asked about timing and desk rejection

How long does a first submission take in this field?

Three to six months to a first decision at the senior SCIE titles, and eight months is not unusual. Add two to four months for a major revision and one to three for production, so plan on eight to eighteen months from submission to an indexed record, and build your thesis timetable around that rather than the best case.

What is a desk rejection and how do I avoid one?

It is a rejection by the editor without peer review, usually within two weeks, and in this field it is almost always scope, method or formatting rather than quality. Read the last ten articles the journal published, match your method to what it actually prints, and make sure the structure, reference style and word limit match the guide before you submit.

Should I email the editor before submitting?

A short presubmission enquiry is normal and welcome at most journals here: three or four sentences with the title, the design, the contribution and a direct question about fit. Keep it brief, attach nothing unless invited, and accept a negative answer as the time saver it is. Thesis, funding and authorship questions sit under Other Academic Support.
