ESG and Corporate Sustainability Performance: Indexed Journal and Conference List with APC and No-APC Options
Journal and conference list verified as on October 2026.
A manuscript on board-level ESG disclosure can be sound, well written, and back in your inbox in four days with no reviewer comment attached. The usual reason is scope. A sustainability science title may want biophysical systems work and will not send out a panel regression on listed firms. The method decides the desk, not the theme, and that is the most common reason management and finance submissions never reach review.
Below are indexed venues for ESG research by index, by quartile and by what the author pays. Every table is dated, and the date is the limit of what we can vouch for.
How to read a quartile: Scopus quartile and JCR quartile are separate systems
Two quartiles are in play and they are not the same thing. The Scopus quartile comes from Scimago and is worked out inside a Scopus subject category. The JCR quartile comes from Clarivate and is worked out inside a Web of Science category, using the impact factor. The same journal can be Q1 on one and Q2 on the other, and neither is wrong. Find out which one your university counts before a quartile decides anything.
The second trap is the index tier. An ESCI journal shows an impact factor and a quartile that look exactly like an SSCI or SCIE one on screen, so an ESCI Q1 will not satisfy a rule that asks for SSCI. Where the tier is not recorded, the table says so instead of guessing, and those titles need an ISSN check on the Master Journal List. Getting this right first is why it sits at the front of Journal Submission Preparation.
Deadline planner
Move the slider to the number of months you have before your deadline. The lanes show which route in this field still fits.
Which journals in ESG research charge no article processing fee and are still indexed?
As on October 2026, the journals below charge the author nothing and every one of them carries a Scopus quartile, with two also listed in Web of Science. Diamond open access means a university press, a society or a government body pays the bill, so the reader and the author both pay nothing. The trade is a narrower scope and a longer wait, not a lower standard.

| Journal | ISSN | Publisher | Web of Science index and JCR quartile | Scopus quartile | Access model and article charge | Journal link | Our note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Smart Construction and Sustainable Cities | 2731-9032 | Springer Nature | No Web of Science tier recorded | Q1 | No APC, Diamond OA No article charge (Diamond OA) | link.springer.com/journal/44268 | Strongest free route here for ESG work with a built environment or city-level unit of analysis. |
| Regional Sustainability | 2097-0129, 2666-660X | KeAi Communications Co. | ESCI, Q1, JIF 4.6 | Q1 | No APC, Diamond OA No article charge (Diamond OA) | www.keaipublishing.com/en/journals/regional-su | A Web of Science listing, Q1 on both systems and no charge. Expect heavy competition for space. |
| International Journal of Sustainable Energy Planning and Management | 2246-2929 | Aalborg University Press | No Web of Science tier recorded | Q1 | No APC, Diamond OA No article charge (Diamond OA) | journals.aau.dk//index.php/sepm/index | Fits ESG papers where the environmental pillar is measured through energy planning data. |
| Solar Energy and Sustainable Development | 2411-9636, 2414-6013 | Libyan Center for Solar Energy Research and Studies | No Web of Science tier recorded | Q1 | No APC, Diamond OA No article charge (Diamond OA) | jsesd-ojs.csers.ly/ojs/index.php/jsesd/about | Technical remit. A disclosure or governance study reads as off-topic here. |

A good home for extractive-industry ESG performance work, wrong for cross-sector panels. |
| Journal of Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies | 2458-973X | Yildiz Technical University | No Web of Science tier recorded | Q2 | No APC, Diamond OA No article charge (Diamond OA) | commons.yildiz.edu.tr/jscmt/about.html | Materials-led. Consider it only if your outcome variable is a built product rather than a firm. |

Web of Science options for ESG research: SCIE, SSCI, AHCI and ESCI
Most ESG papers are sent here, and most desk rejections happen here too. Where the tier says it needs checking, the impact factor is real but the index family still has to be confirmed by ISSN. The AI Journal Finder matches an abstract to the right row in seconds.
| Journal | ISSN | Publisher | Web of Science index and JCR quartile | Scopus quartile | Access model and article charge | Journal link | Our note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nature Sustainability | 2398-9629 | Nature Publishing Group | SCIE, Q1, JIF 27.1 | Q1 | No APC, subscription Subscription or hybrid, no APC | Verify on the publisher page | Wants a finding that changes how a field thinks. A single-country firm panel rarely clears that bar. |
| Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews | 1364-0321, 1879-0690 | Elsevier Ltd | SCIE, Q1, JIF 16.3 | Q1 | No APC, subscription Subscription or hybrid, no APC | Verify on the publisher page | Review-led. Useful when the ESG paper is a structured synthesis rather than new estimation. |
| Sustainable Cities and Society | 2210-6707, 2210-6715 | Elsevier Ltd | SCIE, Q1, JIF 12.0 | Q1 | No APC, subscription Subscription or hybrid, no APC | Verify on the publisher page | An urban unit of analysis is expected. Firm-level ESG scores alone will not hold the scope. |
| IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy | 1949-3029, 1949-3037 | Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. | SCIE, Q1, JIF 10.0 | Q1 | No APC, subscription Subscription or hybrid, no APC | Verify on the publisher page | Engineering venue, listed for completeness rather than for disclosure or ratings work. |
| Current Opinion in Green and Sustainable Chemistry | 2452-2236 | Elsevier B.V. | SCIE, Q1, JIF 9.4 | Q1 | No APC, subscription Subscription or hybrid, no APC | Verify on the publisher page | Commissioned opinion format, so unsolicited empirical submissions are usually turned away. |
| Sustainability Science | 1862-4057, 1862-4065 | Springer | SCIE, Q1, JIF 5.3 | Q1 | No APC, subscription Subscription or hybrid, no APC | Verify on the publisher page | Systems framing required. This is the title most often misread as a general ESG home. |
| Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management | 1535-3958, 1535-3966 | John Wiley and Sons Ltd | SSCI, Q1, JIF 9.1 | Q1 | No APC, subscription Subscription or hybrid, no APC | Verify on the publisher page | The natural first choice for firm-level ESG performance work. High volume, long queue. |
| Sustainable Production and Consumption | 2352-5509 | Elsevier B.V. | SSCI, Q1, JIF 9.6 | Q1 | No APC, subscription Subscription or hybrid, no APC | Verify on the publisher page | An operations angle helps. Pure disclosure studies need a production or consumption hook. |
| npj Urban Sustainability | 2661-8001 | Springer Nature | SSCI, Q1, JIF 8.8 | Q1 | APC charged 2,590 USD | www.nature.com/npjurbansustain | The charge is published openly. Budget for it at the planning stage rather than at acceptance. |
| Journal of Sustainable Tourism | 0966-9582, 1747-7646 | Taylor and Francis Ltd. | SSCI, Q1, JIF 7.8 | Q1 | No APC, subscription Subscription or hybrid, no APC | Verify on the publisher page | Sector-specific. Fits hospitality and travel ESG samples and nothing wider. |

| Resources, Environment and Sustainability | 2666-9161 | Elsevier B.V. | ESCI, Q1, JIF 7.8 | Q1 | APC charged 2,000 USD | www.journals.elsevier.com/resources-environmen | A high impact factor on an ESCI listing, which your promotion rule may or may not count. |
| Geography and Sustainability | 2096-7438, 2666-6839 | Beijing Normal University Press | ESCI, Q1, JIF 8.0 | Q1 | APC charged 1,700 USD | www.journals.elsevier.com/geography-and-sustai | Spatial framing expected. Provincial and regional ESG panels fit better than firm panels. |
| Global Sustainability | 2059-4798 | Cambridge University Press | ESCI, Q1, JIF 5.8 | Q1 | APC charged 3,655 USD | www.cambridge.org/core/journals/global-sustain | The highest charge in this table. Many libraries hold a read and publish deal that covers it. |
| Sustainable Futures | 2666-1888 | Elsevier B.V. | ESCI, Q1, JIF 4.9 | Q1 | APC charged 1,850 USD | www.journals.elsevier.com/sustainable-futures/ | Broad remit, which makes it a sensible second attempt after an SSCI rejection. |
| Journal of Sustainable Finance and Investment | 2043-0795, 2043-0809 | Taylor and Francis Ltd. | ESCI, Q1, JIF 4.3 | Q1 | No APC, subscription Subscription or hybrid, no APC | Verify on the publisher page | The right address for ESG ratings, screening and investor-response studies. |
Scopus-indexed options for ESG research, Q1 and Q2
These have a Scopus quartile but no Web of Science tier recorded. For a Scopus requirement they do the job, and several decide faster than the names above.
| Journal | ISSN | Publisher | Web of Science index and JCR quartile | Scopus quartile | Access model and article charge | Journal link | Our note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Management and Sustainability | 2752-9819, 2752-9827 | Emerald Publishing | No Web of Science tier recorded | Q1 | APC unconfirmed Subscription or hybrid, verify the charge live | Verify on the publisher page | Management framing at a Q1 band. A practical target for a first ESG paper. |
| Sustainable Operations and Computers | 2666-4127 | KeAi Communications Co. | No Web of Science tier recorded | Q1 | APC charged 700 USD | www.keaipublishing.com/en/journals/sustainable | The lowest stated charge in this band. The scope leans operational. |
| Green Technologies and Sustainability | 2949-7361 | KeAi Communications Co. | No Web of Science tier recorded | Q1 | APC charged 800 USD | www.keaipublishing.com/en/journals/green-techn | Technology adoption studies land better here than disclosure studies. |
| Sustainable Technology and Entrepreneurship | 2773-0328 | Elsevier B.V. | No Web of Science tier recorded | Q1 | APC charged 1,800 USD | www.sciencedirect.com/journal/sustainable-tech | Wants a venturing or innovation mechanism, not only an ESG score as a regressor. |
| Technological Sustainability | 2752-1312, 2754-1320 | Emerald Publishing | No Web of Science tier recorded | Q2 | APC unconfirmed Subscription or hybrid, verify the charge live | Verify on the publisher page | A younger title and a reasonable Q2 fallback if the Emerald Q1 above declines. |

Scopus-indexed options, Q3 and Q4, the realistic first-publication tier
For a first paper, a Q3 acceptance in twelve weeks beats a Q1 rejection in nine months, as long as your institution counts the index and not the quartile. PhD scholars planning two or three papers usually start with the Mentorship Program.
| Journal | ISSN | Publisher | Web of Science index and JCR quartile | Scopus quartile | Access model and article charge | Journal link | Our note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| International Journal of Sustainable Economy | 1756-5804, 1756-5812 | Inderscience Enterprises Ltd | No Web of Science tier recorded | Q3 | No APC, subscription Subscription or hybrid, no APC | Verify on the publisher page | Macro and policy framing suits it better than firm-level accounting data. |
| Corporate Governance and Sustainability Review | 2519-8971, 2519-898X | Virtus Interpress | No Web of Science tier recorded | Q3 | No APC, subscription Subscription or hybrid, no APC | Verify on the publisher page | The closest scope match in this band for board and ownership variables. |
| International Journal of Technology Management and Sustainable Development | 1474-2748, 2040-0551 | Intellect Ltd. | No Web of Science tier recorded | Q3 | No APC, subscription Subscription or hybrid, no APC | Verify on the publisher page | A narrow technology-management remit. Frame the paper that way or leave it out. |
| International Journal of Innovation and Sustainable Development | 1740-8822, 1740-8830 | Inderscience Enterprises Ltd | Web of Science listed, tier to verify by ISSN, Q4, JIF 0.6 | Q4 | No APC, subscription Subscription or hybrid, no APC | Verify on the publisher page | It carries an impact factor, so the ISSN check is worth two minutes if your rule names Web of Science. |
EI Compendex indexed journals for ESG research
EI Compendex is an engineering index, so ESG work gets in through the environmental or materials side. If your data are firm disclosures, this is not your route.
| Journal | ISSN | Publisher | Web of Science index and JCR quartile | Scopus quartile | Access model and article charge | Journal link | Our note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sustainable Materials and Technologies | 2214-9929, 2214-9937 | Elsevier B.V. | SCIE, Q1, JIF 9.2 | Q1 | No APC, subscription Subscription or hybrid, no APC | Verify on the publisher page | Laboratory or life-cycle evidence is expected in the results. |
| ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering | 2168-0485 | American Chemical Society | SCIE, Q1, JIF 7.3 | Q1 | No APC, subscription Subscription or hybrid, no APC | Verify on the publisher page | A chemistry venue, included because ESG-adjacent process work does land here. |
| Materials Today Sustainability | 2589-2347 | Elsevier Ltd | SCIE, Q1, JIF 7.9 | Q1 | APC charged 2,530 USD | www.sciencedirect.com/journal/materials-today- | Worth the charge only when the materials contribution is the paper. |

| Advanced Energy and Sustainability Research | 2699-9412 | Wiley-VCH Verlag | ESCI, Q2, JIF 5.7 | Q1 | APC charged 4,300 USD | onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/26999412 | The highest charge on this page. Settle the funding question before starting the submission. |
| Renewable and Sustainable Energy Transition | 2667-095X | Elsevier Ltd | ESCI, Q2, JIF 5.4 | Q1 | APC charged 2,400 USD | www.journals.elsevier.com/renewable-and-sustai | Transition-policy work is welcome, which brings some ESG papers back into range. |
Gold open access journals for ESG research
Gold open access means the article is free to read and the author or the funder pays. Hybrid titles often show no charge until the licence step, so check the article-charge page on the publisher's own site before you submit, and save a dated screenshot of it.
| Journal | ISSN | Publisher | Web of Science index and JCR quartile | Scopus quartile | Access model and article charge | Journal link | Our note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Indexed conference routes for ESG research, and when a conference beats a journal
A conference is the better choice when the deadline is fixed and you have a first result rather than a finished study. It is the wrong choice when your rule counts journal articles only. Indexing is decided one volume at a time, so a series covered in 2024 may not be covered for the next edition.
| Conference or proceedings series | Index status | ISSN or publisher | Coverage and subject | Our note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| World Sustainable Development Outlook | Scopus-indexed proceedings series | 17488133 | 2023-2025, 2019-2020 | The closest subject match in the set for ESG and sustainable development papers. |
| Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies | Scopus-indexed proceedings series | 25153048 | 2024, 2019, 2016, 2013 | Runs every few years, so check whether an edition falls inside your deadline. |
| Academy of Management Annual Meeting Proceedings | EI Compendex book series | Academy of Management | Management information systems, management of technology and innovation, industrial relations | Competitive, well regarded, and a common stepping stone to a journal version. |
| Advances in Science and Engineering Technology International Conferences, ASET | EI Compendex journal | Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. | Energy engineering and power technology, renewable energy and sustainability, civil and structural engineering | Engineering-led ESG work fits here. Governance work does not. |
| Advances in Transdisciplinary Engineering | EI Compendex book series | IOS Press BV | Strategy and management, computer science applications, software | Takes cross-disciplinary framing, which suits ESG and operations crossovers. |
How do I check whether an ESG research journal is still indexed today?
Take the ISSN from the published article and search it on the live Scopus source list and on the Web of Science Master Journal List, because those two records are the only ones that count. Check the discontinued and on-hold files as well as the active list, since a title can be listed and removed inside the same year.
Search by ISSN rather than by name, because near-identical names exist, and compare the publisher web address letter by letter with the address in any email you were sent.
Is a journal still indexed in Scopus in 2026?
Indexing is a live status, so no list, including this one, answers that for today. These tables were checked in October 2026, and only the Scopus source list on the day you look is current.
Which ESG research journals were discontinued by Scopus recently?
Scopus keeps discontinued titles in a separate file from the active source list, and this page lists active titles only, so there is no delisted list here. Download the discontinued sources file from Elsevier and search your ISSN in it, because a removed journal can still advertise coverage on its own site.
What happens to my paper if the journal is delisted after acceptance?
An article published before the delisting date usually stays in the database and keeps its indexed status, and articles published after it are not covered. Ask your university in writing which date it applies, acceptance or publication, because internal rules differ on this point.
Is ABDC A the same as Scopus Q1 for ESG research?
No. ABDC is a list from the Australian Business Deans Council grading business journals A*, A, B and C, while a Scopus quartile is a citation ranking inside a Scopus subject category. A journal can hold ABDC A and sit in Scopus Q2, or hold Scopus Q1 with no ABDC grade at all.
Does my business school accept a Scopus Q1 that is not ABDC ranked?
Many do and many do not, because the rule is written locally rather than nationally. In a school that assesses on ABDC, a Scopus Q1 with no ABDC grade can count for nothing in a promotion case even while it counts for graduation.
The UGC CARE list was discontinued, so how do I verify an ESG research journal now?
The UGC discontinued the CARE list in a public notice dated 11 February 2025, following its decision of 3 October 2024, and published the final list only as a reference resource with no endorsement attached. Verification now runs through the live Scopus source list, the Master Journal List and your own institution's parameters.
A methods note for ESG research: which study designs editors reject on sight
In this field the study design, not the writing, decides the first screen. Four designs come back again and again.
- One country, one panel, no identification strategy. An ESG score regressed on profitability with fixed effects, then described as an effect, reads as correlation. Editors want a policy shock, an instrument or a staggered adoption design, and a second country often supplies one, which is where Collaboration Matching helps.
- A survey that measures what managers think, not what firms do. Perception treated as conduct is a common desk rejection at the SSCI titles above, and bias tests do not save it.
- One ratings provider treated as the truth. The agencies disagree with each other, so a score from a single provider with no second source invites the reviewer comment that costs a whole revision round, and answering those well is Review & Response Support.
- A review with no protocol. Without a stated search method, inclusion rules and a count of what was kept and dropped, most Q1 titles here return it unread.
If your study sits in one of those four, fix the design first. That is Manuscript Preparation Support.
Manuscript Health CheckerFind the structural and scope problems that cause desk rejections. What gets accepted in this field, and what gets rejected
Likely accepted
- An identification strategy. A regulatory shock, staggered adoption or instrument, not only fixed effects.
- Two or more ratings providers. Results shown with each, and disagreement between them discussed.
- Outcomes measured, not only disclosed. Emissions, incidents or fines rather than reporting scores alone.
- Standard controls. Size, leverage, profitability, industry and year.
- Economic magnitude stated. What the effect is worth, not only whether it is significant.
- Full sample construction. Database, version and every filter.
Likely rejected
- ESG score on firm performance, one country, fixed effects. The most submitted design in the field.
- A perception survey of managers. Attitudes standing in for performance.
- One ratings provider treated as truth.
- Greenwashing asserted, not measured.
- A review with no protocol.
- Endogeneity mentioned once and never addressed.
Three mistakes we see in ESG research submissions
Scope mismatch. The word sustainability in a title says nothing about the method a journal accepts. Read the last ten articles it published, not the aims paragraph.
A cloned website. A clone copies the real journal's ISSN, cover and editorial board onto a lookalike address and collects the fee. Reach the journal from the publisher's own site, never from a link in an invitation email, and run anything doubtful through the Predatory Journal Checker.
A charge discovered late. Check the article-charge page before submission and keep the dated screenshot.
Before a paper reaches a reviewer, the editorial office checks the English, the structure and the similarity report. Papers are turned back at that stage every week, and getting a manuscript past it is what Manuscript Editing is for.
AI Journal FinderMatch your abstract to indexed venues in this subject. Plagiarism & AI Similarity CheckerCheck your overlap and fix it before you submit. What editors screen before a reviewer sees your paper
The editorial office checks whether the English is clear enough to review, whether the structure and reference style match the journal, and what the similarity report says. In ESG research a further check is common: whether the ratings provider, the sample filters and the identification strategy are stated in the methods. Run your own overlap check first with the Plagiarism & AI Similarity Checker, and use the AI Journal Finder to confirm the journal's scope matches your abstract before you submit.
Where Research Ramp comes in
We match a finished abstract against live indexing, tell you plainly when a design will not survive the first screen, and prepare the submission so the editorial office has no reason to bounce it on formatting. Subject-matched PhD editors, milestone payments, and the author stays the author throughout. You can see how that has played out on our Case Studies page.

Questions we are asked about ESG submissions
Is an ESCI journal enough for my university's promotion rules?
Sometimes, and only your own rule answers it. Many universities name SCIE and SSCI and exclude ESCI, while others accept any Core Collection listing, so ask for the rule in writing before you submit.
Does a Scopus Q3 paper count as a Scopus publication?
Yes. Indexing is a yes or no fact and the quartile is a separate ranking on top of it, so a Q3 article meets a Scopus-indexed requirement but not a Q1 or Q2 one.
Can I submit to two journals at once?
No. Simultaneous submission breaches the policy of every journal on this page and can end in retraction for all authors. If the wait becomes unreasonable, withdraw formally in writing first.
A thesis chapter, a funding statement or an authorship question sits under Other Academic Support.
