Journals for Digital Transformation and Enterprise Digitalization Research: SCI, SSCI, ESCI, Scopus and EI Compendex Options, With and Without Article Charges
Journal and conference list verified as on October 2026.
Most people choose a journal the wrong way round. They pick a title they admire, then try to make the paper fit it. In digital transformation research three things about your own situation decide the index before any journal name matters: what kind of data you have, when you need the paper out, and who is paying. Work through those three and the shortlist writes itself.
1. What data do you have?
Firm-level panel data, survey responses or case interviews point to the information systems and management titles, which sit in SSCI and Scopus. A model, an architecture, a platform or an algorithm points to EI Compendex and the computing journals. A paper that does both usually satisfies neither, and that is the most common reason a management and finance submission comes back unread.
2. When do you need it out?
If a thesis deadline or a promotion cycle is fixed, the top SSCI titles are a gamble, because a first decision can take six months and a full cycle can run past a year. A Scopus Q2 or Q3 title, or an indexed conference, gets you a dated record far sooner.
3. Who is paying?
If nobody is, say so now rather than at acceptance. There are strong no-fee options in this field, including two Web of Science listed titles, and they are further down this page. If a fund exists, the question becomes how much of it one paper should take.
With those three answered, here is the full picture, index by index.
How to read a quartile before you read the list
Two quartiles exist and they are not interchangeable. The Scopus quartile comes from Scimago and is worked out inside a Scopus subject category. The JCR quartile comes from Clarivate and is worked out inside a Web of Science category, using the impact factor. In this field the two disagree constantly, and several titles below carry a Scopus Q1 alongside a Web of Science Q2 or Q3.
The index tier matters more than either number. An ESCI journal shows an impact factor and a quartile that look exactly like an SSCI one on screen, so an ESCI Q1 will not satisfy a rule that asks for SSCI. Where the tier is not recorded, the tables say so rather than guess, and those titles need an ISSN check on the Master Journal List. Settling all of this before you write the cover letter is the first step in Journal Submission Preparation.
Deadline planner
Move the slider to the number of months you have before your deadline. The lanes show which route in this field still fits.
Web of Science options: SCIE, SSCI, AHCI and ESCI
This is the deepest table on the page, because information systems is a well established Web of Science field. The top six are the discipline's senior journals and they reject most of what they receive. Read down to the ESCI rows before you decide. The AI Journal Finder will match your abstract against these in seconds.

Scopus-indexed options, Q3 and Q4, the realistic first-publication tier
These are the titles a first paper actually gets into, and the charges are small compared with anything above. If you are a PhD scholar who needs a dated indexed record before a viva, plan a sequence rather than one heroic submission. That is what the Mentorship Program does.

Gold open access journals for digital transformation research
Here the charge is published in advance, which is what you want to see. It runs from about 11 USD at one end to about 1,080 USD at the other, so this is the table where a small budget still buys an indexed paper. Charges are shown in US dollars for comparison, but each journal bills in its own currency, so the figure you pay depends on the rate on the day.

Indexed conference routes, and when a conference beats a journal
Conferences matter more in this field than in most, because a digital transformation finding dates quickly. The indexed series that match this subject in our list are few, and they are below. Indexing is decided one volume at a time, so check the coming edition rather than the reputation of the series.
| Conference or proceedings series | Index status | ISSN or publisher | Coverage and subject | Our note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Academy of Management Annual Meeting Proceedings | EI Compendex book series | Academy of Management | Management information systems, management of technology and innovation | The senior management venue. Papers here often become journal articles afterwards. |
| Advances in Database Technology, EDBT | Scopus-indexed proceedings series and EI Compendex | 23672005, OpenProceedings.org | 2016-2025, information systems and software | Dual indexed, which is rare. The contribution has to be genuinely technical. |
| Advances in Science and Technology | Scopus-indexed proceedings series | 16628969 | 2020-2026, 2014, 2010 | Coverage runs into 2026, which helps when a deadline is fixed. |
| Advances in Geographic Information Science | EI Compendex book series | Springer | Information systems, geography, planning and development | Fits spatial or logistics digitalization work, not general firm studies. |
| Advances in Transdisciplinary Engineering | EI Compendex book series | IOS Press BV | Strategy and management, computer science applications, software | Takes work that crosses engineering and management, which describes most of this field. |
The reporting standards this field now expects
Reviewers in information systems and management increasingly check your paper against a published checklist before they judge the idea. Naming the standard you followed, in the methods section, removes an entire class of revision request.
- Survey and PLS-SEM work. Report the measurement model in full: loadings, composite reliability, average variance extracted, and discriminant validity through the heterotrait-monotrait ratio rather than the older Fornell-Larcker test alone. Give the exact software and version, the bootstrap resample count, and how you handled missing data.
- Systematic reviews. Follow PRISMA 2020. That means the flow diagram with counts at every stage, the databases searched with dates, the full search string in an appendix, and your inclusion and exclusion rules written before screening.
- Case study work. Say how many organisations, how many interviews, how long each ran, how you coded, and who else coded. A single coder with no reliability check is the most common weakness we see in this field.
- Secondary firm data. Name the database, the version or extraction date, the exact sample filter and how many firm-year observations survived each filter. A reviewer who cannot rebuild your sample count will ask for it.
- Contributions. Many publishers now want a CRediT contributor statement naming who did what. Write it early, because it prevents the authorship argument that surfaces at proof stage.
Getting all of that in place before submission rather than during revision is the practical part of Manuscript Preparation Support, and it shortens the round that follows, which is Review & Response Support.
What gets accepted in this field, and what gets rejected
Digital transformation is a crowded subject, and editors have become blunt about what they will not send out. The difference is rarely the writing.
Likely accepted
- A defined construct. Digitalization measured through something concrete: IT investment, patent counts, text-mined disclosure, system adoption dates. Not a self-rated score of how digital a firm feels.
- Identification, not association. A policy change, a staggered rollout, a matched control group or an instrument that lets you argue direction.
- A mechanism tested, not asserted. If digitalization raises performance, show the path it travels and test it.
- Context used as an asset. An emerging-market sample explained as a distinct institutional setting, with the comparison spelled out.
- A named reporting standard. PRISMA, CRediT, full measurement model, sample filters that a reader can rebuild.
- Boundaries stated. One country, one sector, one period, said plainly, with a claim scaled to match.
Likely rejected
- Another acceptance-model survey. The same constructs on a new sample, with no new boundary condition, is saturated.
- A digitalization index with no provenance. A composite built from arbitrary weights, with no validation and no sensitivity check.
- Two hundred managers, one questionnaire, one afternoon. Single source, single moment, strong causal language.
- A case study with no method. Six interviews, no coding process, no second coder, conclusions that read as consultancy.
- A framework with nothing behind it. A conceptual diagram that no data anywhere in the paper tests.
- Theory bolted on afterwards. Resource-based view cited once in the introduction and never used again.
When a draft sits on the right, the fix is design rather than language, and it is cheaper than a rejection. If the problem is a missing comparison across countries or firms, a co-author with the other dataset solves it, which is Collaboration Matching.
Three mistakes we see in digital transformation submissions
Scope mismatch. An IS journal wants a contribution to information systems theory, an engineering journal wants a working artefact, and a management journal wants a firm-level finding. A paper that builds a small system and then surveys twelve managers about it satisfies none of the three. Decide which one you are writing before you choose the journal, and run the draft through the Manuscript Health Checker if you are unsure how it reads.
A cloned website. Technology journal names are long, generic and easy to copy, which makes this field a favourite target. A clone lifts the real journal's ISSN, cover and editorial board onto a lookalike address and collects the fee. Reach the journal from the publisher's own site, never from an invitation email, and check anything doubtful with the Predatory Journal Checker.
A charge discovered late. Hybrid titles show no fee until the licence stage. Check the article-charge page before submission and keep a dated screenshot of it.
What editors screen before a reviewer sees your paper
The editorial office checks whether the English is clear enough to review, whether the structure matches the journal format, and what the similarity report says. In this field there is a fourth check, because so many papers reuse a literature review across a thesis and two articles, which raises the overlap score even when nothing is plagiarised. Run your own check first with the Plagiarism & AI Similarity Checker, and settle the language and formatting through Manuscript Editing rather than after a rejection.
How do I know if a digital transformation conference is really EI Compendex indexed?
Check the series in Engineering Village, which is the only place EI Compendex coverage can be confirmed, and check the specific proceedings volume rather than the conference name. As on October 2026, no conference website can prove its own indexing, because the decision is made by the index after the volume is published.
Treat "EI indexed" in a call for papers as a claim, not a fact. A series indexed for three years running can still be dropped for the fourth.
Which digital transformation conferences index in Scopus proceedings?
Scopus lists conference material as proceedings series with their own coverage years, and in this subject the matches include Advances in Database Technology (EDBT) and Advances in Science and Technology, with Advances in Transdisciplinary Engineering and the Academy of Management proceedings covered on the EI Compendex side. Coverage years are listed against each series in the table above.
The number that matters is the coverage year, not the series name. If a series shows coverage to 2025 and you are submitting to the 2027 edition, nobody can yet promise that volume will be indexed.
Can I extend my conference paper into a journal article?
Yes, and it is normal practice in this field, provided the journal version adds substantial new material and you cite the conference paper openly in the manuscript and the cover letter. Most publishers expect somewhere around a third to a half of the journal article to be new.
New means new: more data, a longer period, additional analysis, a deeper theoretical argument. Reformatting the same study and lengthening the literature review is duplicate publication, and the similarity report will show it.
Is an EI conference paper worth the same as a journal paper?
Almost never, in the assessment systems our clients work under. Most universities and promotion committees weight an indexed journal article well above an indexed conference paper, and some count conference output only as supporting evidence.
What the conference buys you is speed and a dated record, which is worth a great deal when a deadline is fixed. Check your own institution's weighting before you spend the registration fee, because a paper that counts for nothing is expensive at any price.
Which journals in digital transformation research charge no article processing fee and are still indexed?
As on October 2026 the no-fee, indexed options in this subject include the International Journal of Information Systems and Project Management, the Australasian Journal of Information Systems, Enterprise Modelling and Information Systems Architectures, Information Technology and Libraries, the Journal of Information Systems Engineering and Business Intelligence, the Weizenbaum Journal of the Digital Society and the International Journal of Computing and Digital Systems. Four of those carry a Web of Science listing as well as a Scopus quartile.
They charge nothing because a university, a society or a research institute funds them. Confirm each by ISSN before you submit, since funding arrangements change.
Is a low publication fee in digital transformation research a warning sign?
No, and this field is the clearest example of why. Several indexed journals on this page charge 50 EUR, 500 UAH or 250000 IDR, because they are run by universities in countries where costs are lower, and the fee reflects the cost of running the journal rather than a margin.
The warning signs are different: a fee that appears only after acceptance, an indexing claim the index itself does not confirm, an editorial board with no traceable affiliations, and promises about review speed made before your paper has been read.
Can I get an article charge waiver as an author from a developing country?
Often yes, and it is usually applied automatically rather than on request. Most large publishers run their schemes off the Research4Life country groups, where Group A countries receive a full waiver on fully open access journals and Group B countries receive a discount, commonly half.
The check happens at submission, based on the corresponding author's institution, so make sure the corresponding author is the one whose affiliation qualifies. Where no country scheme applies, several publishers still run a separate need-based fee assistance process that any author can apply to.
Which publishers waive fees for Indian or African authors?
It depends on which list the publisher uses, and the answer differs sharply between the two cases. Many African countries sit in Research4Life Group A or Group B, so authors there commonly get a full waiver or a half discount automatically from publishers such as Wiley and Sage, and ACM operates a similar country list.
India is the harder case. It is not on the Research4Life lists, so publishers that use those lists alone offer nothing, while publishers that use World Bank lower-middle-income classification, as ACM does, apply a discount. Elsevier scales the charge by national income rather than using a flat waiver step. The practical route for an Indian author is to check the specific journal's fee page, ask the library about an institutional agreement, and apply to the publisher's need-based scheme if neither applies.
Where Research Ramp comes in
We match a finished abstract against live indexing, tell you plainly when a design will not survive the first screen, and prepare the submission so the editorial office has no reason to bounce it on formatting. Subject-matched PhD editors, milestone payments, and the author stays the author throughout. Past work is on our Case Studies page.

Questions we are asked about indexing status
How do I check a journal is still indexed today?
Take the ISSN from a published article and search it on the live Scopus source list and the Web of Science Master Journal List, then check the discontinued and on-hold files as well as the active ones. Do it on the day you submit, because a list from last quarter is not evidence of today's status.
What does "on hold" in Web of Science mean for me?
It means Clarivate has paused coverage while it re-evaluates the journal, usually over editorial or citation concerns. Articles already published stay indexed, but new articles may or may not be covered depending on the outcome, so an on-hold title is a poor choice while your paper is the one in the queue.
My journal was delisted after acceptance, what now?
If your article was published while the journal was still covered, it stays in the database and remains an indexed paper. If it has not appeared yet, you have a decision to make, and withdrawing before publication is cleaner than arguing the point with an assessment committee later. A thesis chapter or authorship question sits under Other Academic Support.
