Internet of Things, Edge Computing and Cybersecurity: Diamond OA, Gold OA and Subscription Routes Compared
Journal and conference list verified as on October 2026.
A doctoral student has an intrusion detection method for IoT devices and eighteen months until submission. She wants it published in an IEEE transactions journal and cited in the thesis. In this field that is achievable, but only if she plans backwards from the deadline rather than forwards from the draft.
For a thesis that means submitting at least a year before you need the article, and having a second venue chosen before the first decision arrives, because desk rejection rates at the flagship IoT journal are high. Conference papers can shorten the path, and this field has a strong indexed conference circuit, covered below. The tables start with Web of Science and work through the other indexes.
How to read a quartile before you read the list
The Scopus quartile comes from Scimago, inside a Scopus subject category. The JCR quartile comes from Clarivate, using the impact factor. In IoT and security the two usually agree at the top and diverge lower down.
An ESCI journal shows an impact factor and a quartile that look exactly like an SCIE one, so an ESCI Q1 will not satisfy a rule asking for SCIE. Several open access security journals are ESCI, which matters if your rule names SCIE. Settling this first is part of Journal Submission Preparation.
Deadline planner
Move the slider to the number of months you have before your deadline. The lanes show which route in this field still fits.
Which family of journal fits your paper
IoT and security research splits into four families, each with its own reviewers. Choosing the right one before the ranking avoids most scope rejections.
- IoT systems and edge computing. Device architectures, edge offloading, energy-aware scheduling and deployments. The IEEE Internet of Things Journal, ACM Transactions on Internet of Things and the Journal of Cloud Computing sit here. Reviewers expect measurements on real or emulated hardware.
- Security and privacy. Attacks, defences, intrusion detection and authentication. IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security and Computers and Security lead. Reviewers expect a threat model before anything else.
- Networking. Protocols, wireless, network optimisation and 6G. IEEE Transactions on Networking and the Journal of Network and Computer Applications fit. Analytical or simulation depth is expected, validated against realistic traffic.
- Security policy and governance. Regulation, economics and management of cyber risk. The Journal of Cybersecurity and Applied Cybersecurity and Internet Governance publish this work, judged as social science rather than engineering.
A paper that crosses families, such as a lightweight intrusion detection scheme for sensor devices, should go where its main contribution lies. If the novelty is the detection method, aim at the security journals. If it is making detection feasible on constrained hardware, aim at the IoT systems journals.
Web of Science options: SCIE, SSCI and ESCI
The IEEE transactions dominate, all subscription with no APC. Two psychology journals appear because they share the prefix cyber, and are marked. The AI Journal Finder matches an abstract against these in seconds.

Diamond open access: IoT and security journals with no APC
Led by a genuinely strong title: Digital Communications and Networks, SCIE Q1 with an impact factor of 7.5 and no APC. Below it the tier drops, and two titles carry cautions in their notes. For a doctoral student with no budget, this table and the subscription IEEE journals together cover almost every realistic target, so the charge question rarely needs to decide the venue in this field.

Indexed conference routes in IoT and security
A strong circuit with long confirmed coverage, and in this field a good conference paper followed by an extended journal version is a normal and respected route. The flagship academic security conferences, such as IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy, USENIX Security, ACM CCS and NDSS, do not appear in the source data behind this page, so check their proceedings separately.

The reporting checklist IoT and security reviewers expect
This field has no single named checklist like CONSORT in medicine, but reviewers apply a consistent one. Missing any of these is the commonest reason for a first-round rejection.
- A stated threat model. Who the attacker is, what they can access and what they want. A security paper without one is returned.
- Current datasets, with their flaws acknowledged. KDD Cup 99 and NSL-KDD are widely considered outdated for intrusion detection. Use recent datasets, explain the choice, and report class imbalance.
- Baselines that are current. Compare against recent methods, tuned fairly, not against techniques from a decade ago.
- Resource costs for IoT. Latency, memory, energy and computation on the device. A method too heavy for the hardware it targets is not an IoT contribution.
- Testbed or deployment details. Hardware, firmware, network conditions and scale. Simulation-only results need a reason.
- Reproducibility artefacts. Code, configurations and data released. ACM's Artifact Review and Badging scheme sets a useful standard even for journal papers.
- Responsible disclosure. If you found a real vulnerability, state that the vendor was notified and when.
Building this in before submission is part of Manuscript Preparation Support, and the revision round is Review & Response Support.
What gets accepted in this field, and what gets rejected
Likely accepted
- Real devices or a realistic testbed.
- A clear threat model and attacker capabilities.
- Resource measurements on target hardware.
- Recent datasets and fair baselines.
- Code released with a version reference.
- Limitations and failure cases stated.
Likely rejected
- Intrusion detection on NSL-KDD with accuracy above 99 percent.
- Blockchain added to IoT with no performance cost measured.
- A framework diagram with no implementation.
- Deep learning with no resource analysis.
- Surveys that list papers without synthesis.
- Security claims with no attacker model.
How do I know if an IoT and cybersecurity conference is really EI Compendex indexed?
Check the specific proceedings volume in Engineering Village, the only place EI Compendex coverage can be confirmed. A conference website cannot prove its own indexing, because the index decides after the volume is published.
Be especially careful with small conferences that describe themselves as technically co-sponsored by IEEE. That means IEEE lent its name. It does not guarantee coverage in EI or Scopus.
Which IoT and cybersecurity conferences index in Scopus proceedings?
In the data behind this page, confirmed Scopus series include the IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man and Cybernetics, IEEE CLOUD, IEEE QRS, IEEE CAMAD, the IEEE SECON workshops and the European Conference on Information Warfare and Security. Coverage years are in the conference table.
Check the coming edition, not only the series. ECCWS, for example, has a gap in 2021.
What does a Diamond open access journal live on if the author pays nothing?
An institution pays instead. In this field the free titles are funded by university presses, a national research institute and publishers that treat a flagship open title as an investment.
That is how Digital Communications and Networks can sit at SCIE Q1 with an impact factor of 7.5 and charge nothing.
Is a low publication fee in IoT and cybersecurity research a warning sign?
Not by itself. Several genuine Scopus Q1 titles here charge 700 to 800 US dollars. The warning signs are different: a fee that appears only after acceptance, acceptance in days, unconfirmed indexing, and very high publication volume, which can precede a Scopus review.
Can I get an APC waiver as an author from a developing country?
Often, and usually automatically. Most large publishers use the Research4Life country groups, where Group A countries receive a full waiver on fully open access journals and Group B countries a discount, commonly half, checked against the corresponding author's institution.
In this field you often do not need one: the IEEE transactions and the leading Elsevier titles charge no APC.
Which IoT and cybersecurity publishers waive fees for Indian or African authors?
Many African countries sit in Research4Life Group A or B, so authors there commonly receive full or half waivers automatically from publishers including Springer Nature, Wiley and Elsevier. India is not on those lists, so publishers using them alone offer nothing, and some apply income-based discounts instead.
For Indian authors the practical route is the subscription IEEE and Elsevier journals and the Diamond table, which between them hold most of the strong venues.
The UGC CARE list was discontinued, so how do I verify an IoT or cybersecurity journal now?
The UGC discontinued the CARE list in a public notice dated 11 February 2025, following its decision of 3 October 2024, and published the final list only as a reference resource. Verification now runs through the live Scopus source list, the Web of Science Master Journal List and your institution's parameters.
Which IoT and cybersecurity journals charge no article processing fee and are still indexed?
As on October 2026 the no-APC indexed options here include Digital Communications and Networks, Intelligent and Converged Networks, the Journal of Edge Computing, the Journal of Cyber Security and Risk Auditing, the International Journal of Data and Network Science, Applied Cybersecurity and Internet Governance and the EAI Endorsed Transactions on Industrial Networks and Intelligent Systems.
Every subscription title in the tables, including all the IEEE transactions, also charges no APC.
What editors screen before a reviewer sees your paper
The editorial office checks whether the English is clear enough to review, whether the structure matches the journal, and what the similarity report says. In this field the similarity check often flags related work sections copied across a team's papers. Run your own check first with the Plagiarism & AI Similarity Checker, and settle language through Manuscript Editing.
Where Research Ramp comes in
We match a finished abstract against live indexing, tell you plainly when a design will not survive the first screen, and prepare the submission so the editorial office has no reason to bounce it. Subject-matched PhD editors, milestone payments, and the author stays the author. Partners with testbeds or hardware are Collaboration Matching, and past work is on our Case Studies page.

Questions we are asked about timing and desk rejection
How long does a first submission take in this field?
Six to twelve months from submission to a citable article is normal for IoT and security journals: a desk decision in one to three weeks, two to four months to a first decision after review, then revision and production. Indexed conferences can be faster, with fixed decision dates.
What is a desk rejection and how do I avoid one?
A rejection by the editor without peer review. In this field the commonest causes are an outdated dataset, no threat model, a method too heavy for the target device, and a topic outside the journal's scope. Read the last two issues and fix the checklist above first.
Should I email the editor before submitting?
Rarely needed at the large IEEE and Elsevier journals, which handle thousands of submissions. It helps for special issues and smaller journals when fit is unclear. Keep it to a few sentences. Thesis, funding and authorship questions sit under Other Academic Support.
